Want to Sleep Better? Use These Bedroom Design Tips
February 28, 2023
2016 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that approximately one-third of adults in the U.S. do not get enough sleep on a regular basis. If you are in that group, you should certainly take steps to start getting more rest. In addition to adjusting your schedule, making lifestyle changes, and visiting your doctor if necessary, you should also ensure that your bedroom is an environment that promotes relaxation and rest. Here are some bedroom design tips to that end:
Install Blackout Curtains
Experts often recommend sleeping in an environment that is completely devoid of light. That can be challenging if you live on a busy street with a lot of traffic or street lamps. Plus, if you sleep during the day, sunlight can spill into your room and disrupt your rest.
To create a dark environment, consider installing blackout curtains. They can block out almost 100% of light from outside. To get as much benefit as possible from them, have them custom-made so they completely cover your windows.
Outfit Your Bed
Your bed should be an oasis of comfort. You might need to invest in a new mattress. Be sure to research different brands and styles so you can find one that fits your unique body type and sleep style. If you and your partner have different preferences, you might need to choose a mattress with adjustable firmness on each side.
Your bedding is also important. Your sheets, blankets, and pillows should all be comfortable and clean. If you opt for custom bedding, you can select the materials and style of bedding that are just right for you.
Choose the Right Colors
Cool and neutral colors tend to promote relaxation. Hues like beige, gray, off-white, soft blue, and light green are ideal for a bedroom setting because they can help to calm your mind and promote sleep. Conversely, bright and stimulating colors — such as red, orange, and yellow — might be more suitable for other spaces in your home.
Limit Activities
The human brain tends to associate certain spaces with certain activities. For example, kitchens are for eating, bathrooms are for showering, and family rooms are for games and television. But what if your bedroom serves multiple purposes? If you have a computer desk in a corner of your bedroom, it might be difficult for you to disassociate that from the room’s primary purpose, which is to serve as a haven of rest.
It would be best to reserve your bedroom for sleep and intimacy with your partner. Moving other activities to other parts of your house may promote better sleep.
Sleep is vital for your overall health and your quality of life! Hopefully, the above bedroom design tips will help you get the shuteye you need to function and feel your best.
